Well......I've FINALLY gotten my wife's 2005 Sporty back together! As some of you that know me personally may know, I haven't been very happy with the progress of this latest project. I tore her bike apart several weeks ago, and then got delayed time and time again because one of our suppliers (who shall remain nameless at this time) kept fouling up our order.
The parts for the later model XL's are not as prevalent as they are for the older bikes. Harley made some minor changes with the cables and suppliers don't seem to have as many over-the-counter options available. In our case this led to us ordering a custom made clutch cable to get the correct length for our bar swap.
We picked up a set of 10.25 mini-apes from Krome Werks to replace the dirt track style bars that were on it. I don't think that they were the stock bars. We bought the bike used and it had those mounted on top of 4" straight risers when we got it.

Before The Bar Swap
Originally we were going to get shorter risers (1 1/2"), but when I sat the new bars in the tall clamps my wife thought the felt just right where they were. So why spend the extra dough right?
I had to add 9 1/2 inches to the switch housing harnesses to allow me to run the wires internally. I put shrink tubing over the individual wires and then 1/2" shrink tube over eached spliced section.
After drilling 5/8 holes in each wiring dimple and about a 1 1/4" elongated slot on the underside of the bars between the knurls and deburring ll holes, I carefully pulled the harnesses through the bars.
Rather then extend the turn signal harnesses as well, we opted to relocate the front signals on the fork tubes. We liked this look better anyway. Since we had the switch housings off we also installed a new set of flame grips.
We ordered a custom brake line for the front brake, but when our supplier messed up the order we opted to order chrome banfo fittings and a 44" universal brake line from
J & P Cycles instead.
J & P bailed us out with a really quick delivery!
The new bars work really nice with the forward controls I installed last year. The bike is pretty comfortable even when a big dude like me is riding it (just as long as I don't hit any bumps!). It a lot of fun to ride and looks pretty cool too. The main thing is that my wife loves it and it's fun to watch her riding with a big ol' grin on her face!
